Birthday interview questions: what to ask your kid every year

A birthday interview is a short recorded conversation you have with your child on their birthday, asking the same set of questions every year. It takes about four minutes. The point isn't the answers on their own — it's watching the same twelve answers change from age three to age four to age five, in their own voice, on video.

Below are the twelve questions to ask every year, the age-specific ones worth adding as they get older, and a printable version you can keep on your phone.

The 8 Questions to Ask Every Year

Ask them in this order, every year, without changing the wording. Twelve questions takes three to five minutes with a small child and slightly longer once they start explaining themselves.

  1. How old are you today?

  2. How would you describe yourself?

  3. What are you really good at?

  4. Who do you love spending time with?

  5. What do you want to be when you grow up?

  6. What’s the best thing you did this year?

  7. What do you think you’ll like next year?

  8. What’s one thing you never want us to forget about you?

We make the book

Make the book in as little as 10 minutes.

Make the book in as little as 10 minutes.

You upload your entire year's worth of photos and videos. We design the book.

You review and personalize anything you'd like before it's printed.

We notice the threads

The things that made this year theirs — what they were into, who they were with, what kept showing up, all year long.

We pull the best lines from your videos

The things they actually said, set as quotes in the book.

We caption the best photos

A starting line for each one, based on what's actually in it — add to it if you want, or leave it as is.

We do a full visual pass on your entire book

Duplicates gone, blurry shots gone, one consistent color grade across every page.

Make it Yours

Or take your time to
personalize it.

We help you easily add meaningful content that make the book unmistakably yours — nothing complicated, nothing required.

Birthday interview

The same questions, asked again every year, with age-appropriate ones added as they grow — so this year's answers sit right next to last year's.

Birthday Letter

A letter from you, a few reflection prompts answered in your own words, or an invitation for grandparents and family to add theirs — any or all of it, together in the book.

Photos You'd Forget to Take

A short, age-specific photo list — their artwork, their bedroom, a favorite toy, the lovey that's falling apart.

Plus more, all optional
